Dr Duncan Copp & Houston Symphony:
Cosmos – An HD Odyssey Blu-ray & DVD
Dr Duncan Copp commissioned me to create the DVD & Blu-ray Authoring and create the physical branding elements for Houston Symphony: Cosmos – An HD Odyssey. This was the third and final part of the HD Odyssey trilogy (and I would also be involved in making the companion educational resource, see here) so I was eager to ensure the final chapter looked just as good as the rest.
Houston Symphony: Cosmos – An HD Odyssey uses stunning NASA imagery alongside Antonin Dvorak’s masterful Symphony no. 9, From the New World. This me plenty of exciting images to utilise. I chose red as the primary colour (the previous primaries had been beige and purple). Using red dovetailed nicely with the astrological phenomena of ‘red shift’ which was especially relevant to the subject matter.
For consistency I used the same core image of Messier 82 Galaxy starburst (fortunately the original NASA images were huge this meant that so there were no issues with scaling) and created the majority of the assets as vector graphics within Adobe Illustrator. Because I took the vector route I was able to scale the graphics for anything, from massive auditorium posters to relatively litho print disc covers. I used After Effects and Premiere to create the motion menus, intro sequence, moving image galleries and end credits.
DVD & Blu-ray Authoring
The finished discs included x2 image slide shows as well as two audio tracks, the main feature, and two documentary extras. The disc structure was simple so I was happy to use Adobe Encore for the DVD & Blu-ray authoring. I encoded the image slides as videos so that we could have audio tracks on each one. Due the additional run time on the extras a double disc set was briefly considered. In the end I used enhanced AVC encoders I was able to get a bitrate of approx 30mbps for all the content and still have it looking excellent.
The main objective of the designs was to create a disc that did justice to the magnificent source material. My client has received a lot of positive feedback about the DVD & Blu-ray so I definitely feel that I managed to achieve that.
